CHARACTER
Character Name: Allura
Character Age: The human equivalent of 17-22 (no specific canon age is given)
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Season 7, Episode 9 (Around when they first arrive on Earth.)
History: Link
Personality: At first glance, Allura is the quintessential ideal fairytale-type princess: Kind, and self-sacrificing. As one of the few people standing in the way of the Galra’s total domination of the universe, Allura is unquestionably good, willing to go to any lengths to free and protect peoples all over the universe. A large reoccurring theme in her story involves sacrifice, and she repeatedly gave of herself for others- in early canon she sacrificed her father's AI for the team, allowed herself to be captured in place of Shiro, and later in canon she not only sacrificed her castleship, but her very life for the sake of the universe, even, as her final dialogue with Shiro puts it “most of them won't know the sacrifice you made so they could live” Beyond that, she is a deeply caring and curious person, often offering words of encouragement and sympathy to those that need it, feeling sympathy for creatures that are much different from herself, such as the Balmeran, a planet-sized creature. And there’s nothing much more fairytale-princess-like than her penchant for spending time with a team of small pastel mice.
However, as much as her actions are good in nature, her motivations are often very deeply rooted in an almost self-destructive determination. Despite her soft appearance, Allura is bull-headed to a fault, and can be a bit of a control freak. From the beginning, she is the one eager to face the Galra head on, and often she reacts emotionally to situations, rather than with careful pragmatism. Although she's calmed down a lot in later canon, she still has a lot of those hot-headed tendencies and she can easily slip into being overbearing and subverting the rest of the team when she thinks that her way is the best way. In early canon, she refuses to listen to anyone else when she makes up her mind to sneak on board Zarkon's ship, and ends up making the rest of the team bend to her will. And she is unsatisfied in the skills of the newest batch of paladins, she forces them into a brutal training regiment, running attack drills in the middle of the night, and showing open frustrating with their inability to click as a team. Ironically, later, when she becomes the paladin of the Blue Lion, her greatest hurdle is learning how to give up control, and accept that she is one of many equal parts.
Her bull-headedness also manifests in a deep seated prejudice, and Allura is often guilty of painting large swaths of people with a broad brush. Although she has come to consider parts of the Galra her allies and friends, it took a long time for her to reach that point, and when it is discovered that Keith is part Galra, her attitude towards him changes entirely, becoming cold and distrustful even though they have been friends for some time, and it’s not until Lotor calls her out for judging him on her preconceptions of his race that she starts to relent and trust him. Similarly, she is predisposed to trust fellow Alteans, and Altean allies at first glance. When they crossed into another reality where the Galra were defeated by the Alteans, she took the longest of everyone to realize that the Alteans were tyrants. Fortunately, Allura is not relentless, and has repeatedly shown great ability to adapt, forgive, and trust others, even if she did not previously do so.
At the point in canon that she's from, Allura carries a lot of insecurities about herself, and her place in the universe. Having lost her planet, her people, her ship, and even her crown, she seems to struggle with her identity outside of being a paladin of Voltron. At one point she later confesses to Lance that she feels like she has no home or family to return to once everything is over. To that end, she seems to wrap herself deeply in her duties and work, and it's others that usually have to pull her away to give her a chance to take time for herself.
Inventory:
Pink Paladin Armor - High quality space armor made by the Alteans that has a lot of nice features including being able to project a full body shield, flashlight, communications, jetpack, and can hold her bayard inside of it.
Bayard - Weapon of a paladin, is able to take the form of what fits it's user the best. For Allura this most commonly manifests in the shape of a whip.
Four space mice - generally above-average mice who she has a psychic connection with, often gossips with them and uses them for getting into small places.
Jumpsuit - Thermo-regulating, goes under her armor.
Abilities: As a disclaimer: Allura’s powers are vast and not incredibly well defined. They’re often used as a deus-ex-machina in canon and, at the climax of the series, more-or-less she is capable of bringing back the entirety of all of existence back from destruction. In short she can be OP as hell in very specific circumstances. Obviously things that powerful/game-breakingly powerful won’t be coming into play here but I have done my best to summarize:
Shapeshifting – Alteans have a (presumably limited) ability to shapeshift, this mostly seems limited to size and color.
Superior Strength – Allura has shown the ability to not only throw people who are significantly larger than herself, but also the ability to bend metal with her hands.
Empathy/Minor Telepathy – Whether it’s magically charged or just by nature of who she is, she consistently has a connection with other life forms, capable of speaking to the Balmera (A planet-sized creature) and fosters a telepathic link with the four Altean mice that spent 10,000 years in her stasis chamber with her.
Quintessence/Life Manipulation/Altean Alchemy - In canon, Quintessence is the strongest form of energy that permeates every living thing, and while all Alteans have a connection with it, Allura’s is nearly prodigious. She has used these powers to heal a planet-sized creature from the brink of death, healed/revived Lance, transferred Shiro’s soul from the Black Lion into his body, give ships incredible powers, etc. In the context of the game, I mostly see this being used in the form of healing living things and largely for flavor text of feeling the energy in things.
Aside from her powers, Allura is also an accomplished pilot and hand-to-hand combatant (mostly using whips and staves but she is studied in a variety of weapons). Allura is also immune to getting brain freeze when eating ice cream too quickly (the most powerful of abilities).
Flaws: If the gods are looking for emotions to feed off of, look no further than one (1) very emotional princess. For all that Allura is very much a good character, she is a highly reactive person and swayed heavily by her emotions in the moment. While her motivations are deeply altruistic, her actions often are hot headed and she operates with a nearly self-destructive determination at times. When Zarkon turns his army towards Altea, Allura is the one demanding that they fight back with everything they’ve got, and during the stand-off with Lotor, after she has been deeply wronged, Allura is largely the aggressor, firing on him first even when he is still trying to make peace.
Allura also carries a lot of sorrow and resentment over the loss of her planet, and while she eventually comes to realize that not all Galra are bad, she still carries a lot of hate for people like Emperor Zarkon, and even though it’s an alternate reality version of her, it’s shown that, had things played out differently, Allura had the capacity to entirely crush the Galra empire and become an authoritarian in her own right (in the name of peace, but through highly questionable means). Canon Allura is a lot less ruthless than her alternate reality counterpart, but it still proves that she has the capacity for ethically questionable decisions, especially under the wrong influence (and in later canon, she literally merges with an evil entity for the sake of defeating the Big Bad.)
