Character Information
Name: Princess Allura
Canon: Voltron: Legendary Defender
Canon Point: Season 2, Episode 6, when Allura and Keith run away on the escape pod together.
Age: Never specified. Estimated to be the human equivalent of 17-20-ish (Alteans are like elves in that they have lifespans much longer than a human's)
History: Link
Personality: At first glance, Allura is the quintessential ideal fairytale-type princess: Kind, curious, and self-sacrificing. As one of the few people standing in the way of the Galra’s total domination of the universe, Allura is unquestionably good, willing to go to any lengths to free and protect peoples all over the universe. Although she has a good sense of humor, it is usually hidden behind the fact that Allura tends to take things a little too seriously much of the time, and is very down-to-business about any goals that she's set out to accomplish, whether that means throwing herself headfirst into a dangerous mission, or kicking butts at a food fight.
A large reoccurring theme in her story involves sacrifice, and she repeatedly gave of herself for others- in early canon she dismantles her late father's AI when it's discovered that a virus was infecting the castle's systems and putting the entire team in danger; on a Galra cruiser, she forced Shiro to escape while she stayed behind and allowed herself to get captured in place of him, and later in canon she not only sacrifices her castleship, but her very life for the sake of the universe. Even, as her final dialogue with Shiro puts it “most of them won't know the sacrifice you made so they could live” Beyond that, she is a deeply caring and curious person, often offering words of encouragement and sympathy to those that need it, empathizing with creatures that are much different from herself, such as the Balmera, a planet-sized creature. And there’s nothing much more fairytale-princess-like than her penchant for spending time with a team of small pastel mice who enjoy putting on shows and playing with her hair.
However, as much as her actions are good in nature, her motivations are often very deeply rooted in an almost self-destructive determination. Despite her soft appearance, Allura is bull-headed to a fault, and can be a bit of a control freak. From the beginning, she is eager to face the Galra head on, and often she reacts emotionally to situations, rather than with careful pragmatism. Although she prefers to work together as a team, and will preach to others about the value of being stronger as a whole, she can easily slip into being overbearing and subverting the rest of the team when she thinks that her way is the best way. In early canon, she refuses to listen to anyone else when she makes up her mind to sneak on board a Galra ship. Rather than personally bend the others to her will, she still puts them in an impossible position where they cannot dissuade her from risking herself, nor can they stand back passively out of duty of being her friends and fellow paladins who don't want to see her hurt, and ultimately they are dragged into an extremely dangerous mission because of her. When she becomes the paladin of the Blue Lion, her greatest hurdle is learning how to give up control, accept that she is one of many equal parts, and truly become part of a team.
Her bull-headedness also manifests in a deep seated prejudice, and Allura is often guilty of painting large swaths of people with a broad brush. Although she has come to consider parts of the Galra her allies and friends, it took a long time for her to reach that point. While it hasn't happened in canon yet, when it is discovered that Keith is part Galra, her first instinct is to become cold and distrustful of him, even though they have been friends for some time. And, by the same token, she has been predisposed to trust fellow Alteans, and Altean allies at first glance. When they crossed into another reality where the Galra were defeated by the Alteans, she took the longest of everyone to realize that the Alteans in this reality were tyrants. Fortunately, Allura is not relentless, and has repeatedly shown great ability to adapt, forgive, and ask for forgiveness herself when she has wronged others. She is not too proud to admit where she was wrong and works to correct her flaws once she's aware of them.
It's worth noting that, as an Altean (and royalty to boot) Allura's upbringing has definitely influenced her behavior, and she can seem a bit standoffish when confronted with things that are outside of her comfort zone. While the Alteans were a space-faring race, and Allura raised as a diplomat, there is still a great deal of awkwardness that comes up when dealing with social mores that fall outside of the scope of her expectations.
Abilities & Skills: As a forward: Allura’s powers are vast and not incredibly well defined. They’re often used as a deus-ex-machina in canon. In short she can be OP as hell, albeit in very specific circumstances.
Shapeshifting – Alteans have a (presumably limited) ability to shapeshift, this mostly seems limited to size and color, as when she shifted to better hide on the Galra ship, she only made herself taller and more purple, and still relied heavily on a disguise to mask her hair/eyes/markings/ears.
Superior Strength – Allura has shown the ability to not only throw people who are significantly larger than herself, but also the ability to bend metal with her hands ( Not with any degree of finesse but still worth noting)
Empathy/Minor Telepathy – Whether it’s magically charged or just by nature of who she is, she consistently has a connection with other life forms, capable of speaking to the Balmera (A planet-sized creature) and fosters a telepathic link with the four Altean mice that spent 10,000 years in her stasis chamber with her.
Quintessence/Life Manipulation - In canon, Quintessence is the strongest form of energy that permeates every living thing, and while all Alteans have a connection with it, Allura’s is nearly prodigious. On her own she is capable of bringing someone back from the brink of death, cause a bare tree to sprout, etc,
Aside from her powers, Allura is also an accomplished pilot and hand-to-hand combatant (mostly using whips and staves but she is studied in a variety of weapons). Allura is also immune to getting brain freeze when eating ice cream too quickly (the most powerful of abilities).
Inventory/Companions: Jumpsuit suitable for space-conditions, tiara
Choice: Witch
Reason: Witch seems like the most natural choice for Allura as she is already incredibly attuned to the flow of life energy and the Voltron-universe’s equivalent of magic. Having her learn how to adapt to a form of magic that’s different from what she’s innately used to seems like an interesting path to go on and I really like the concept of the Witches building up too much power that they need Monsters to help balance. Plus she’s already non-human so there’s less desire to play with a monsterous form. I'm mostly planning on having her focus on evocation, since most of her abilities in canon involve the manipulation of power and energy.
